about the piece

iland

During the last two years I tried to approach the phenomenon of the Island. In this context I did a lot of research in the literary, mythological, geographical and historical background of the subject. When do we talk of islands, where and how do islands appear, what is an insular situation, what is an insular sound?

The basic material of the composition was recorded during my residency on the island Sylt in April 2008. For four weeks I went out everyday to collect sounds from the island with hydro-, contact- and other kinds of microphones.

Later acoustic details and gestures where extracted, filtered and processed and then arranged and composed with Ambisonics in the Cube of the IEM. The composition sculptures space related constellations of sound sources, clusters and fields according to insular models.
